Capoeira is an ancient Afro-Brazilian martial art full of rich cultural history. Embodied in dance, Capoeira is a balanced integration of self-defense, acrobatics, music, and culture. “Nov. 2014, Capoeira was inscribed in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.” (UNESCO)

Objective:
The main intention behind this series of artworks is to demonstrate the aesthetics of the movements found in Capoeira while presenting this ancient discipline in a more contemporary fashion.

Methodology:
I started with a photo shoot with three Capoeiristas to capture movements specific to Capoeira, as well as the unique styles of each individual. The pixel stretch effect was used to illustrate the motion and watercolors to capture very specific movements that happen during the roda (when Capoeiristas face each other). Finally, the poster series show complex maneuvers inherent to Capoeira, involving hands on the ground and inverted kicks, in a context of freedom to practice this art in any given place.
