Overview:
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art deeply rooted in cultural tradition and expression. Blending elements of dance, music, acrobatics, and self-defense, Capoeira is both a physical discipline and a living heritage. In November 2014, it was recognized by UNESCO and added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Objective:
This series of artworks aims to celebrate the unique aesthetics of Capoeira’s movement while presenting the art form through a contemporary visual lens. The goal was to honor its rich cultural history while inviting modern audiences to engage with its expressive power.

Methodology:
The project began with a photoshoot featuring three Capoeiristas, each bringing their own style and technique. These sessions captured the distinctive gestures and flow that define Capoeira. To convey motion and energy, I applied a pixel stretch effect that visually extends each movement, while watercolor overlays were used to highlight specific gestures that occur during the roda—the traditional circle in which Capoeira is practiced.
The final poster series showcases some of the art’s most dynamic and complex maneuvers—often involving inverted kicks and ground-based techniques—set against open, natural environments that reflect the freedom and fluidity inherent to the practice. The result is a tribute to Capoeira’s grace, strength, and enduring spirit.
