Overview:
Since my first encounter with music, I have always been attracted by the cover of an album. I often wanted to listen to an artist based on its album artwork, even without knowing anything about the genre of music I was going to find. In many aspects, graphic design is similar to music. As a musician myself, I often approach a visual composition like I approach a musical composition, aiming to share a meaningful story.
Objective:
They say "don't judge a book by its cover." However, while this is true, I often want to know more about a book based on its cover. This also applies to music cover art. First impression matters. The cover should be representative of the music, without misleading the listener.
Methodology:
As always, the first and main step was to have a conversation with the musicians to understand their music and their personalities. What story is behind the music? Is there a specific message? Is the purpose of this album purely commercial or is it purely artistic? Based on theses informations, I chose the medium (photography, illustration, 3D) that was most appropriate to relate their story. I also wanted to make sure that each artwork was unique, with the idea in mind that collectors might want to hang it on wall. In addition, the design must be flexible to be easily adapted to various sizes and materials, wether for print or digital communication.
