Overview:
soapbox is a promotional visual project developed for Megan Mazarick’s contemporary dance-theater piece, presented as part of the DanceVisions 2024–2025 residency at Performance Garage. The design aims to translate the performance’s thematic complexity—centered around identity, expression, and public persona—into compelling visuals that communicate both conceptual depth and emotional intensity.
Objective:
The primary goal was to create a bold and cohesive visual identity for soapbox that would resonate with both contemporary dance audiences and the broader arts community.
Key objectives included:
1. Capturing the duality of public vs. private self-expression.
2. Reflecting the layered nature of Megan Mazarick’s choreography and the emotional landscape of the performance.
3. Designing materials (poster, digital graphics, and press visuals) that feel visually performative and convey a sense of embodied tension, introspection, and theatricality.
Methodology:
Concept Development: Rooted in the title soapbox—a metaphor for amplified voices and performance of self—the design explores fragmentation, speech, and internal monologue, evoking vulnerability and tension.
Visual Language: Abstract overlays, stark lighting, and symbolic layering mirror the performance’s examination of identity and platforming.
Photography Collaboration: High-contrast, emotionally charged portraits of the performer were enhanced through subtle glitch effects and texture overlays to echo the distortion between persona and truth.
Design Tools: Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator were used for composition and post-processing, with a focus on layered transparency, grain, and color saturation to echo emotional nuance.
